Title: Wicked Nights
Author: Gena Showalter
Publication: June 26, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin HQN
Rating: 4 out 5

Synopsis: Leader of the most powerful army in the heavens, Zacharel has been deemed nearly too dangerous, too ruthless -- and if he isn't careful, he'll lose his wings. But this warrior with a heart of ice will not be deterred from his missions at any cost…until a vulnerable human tempts him with a carnal pleasure he's never known before.

Accused of a crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller has spent four years in an institution for the criminally insane. Demons track her every move, and their king will stop at nothing to have her. Zacharel is her only hope for survival, but is the brutal angel with a touch as hot as hell her salvation -- or her ultimate damnation?

Review: This is a YA/NA blog, but I feel like this book is borderline NA. Gena Showalter is taking her Lord of the Underworld series and branching off into the secondary characters lives: Angels. They're known to be perfect beings. Everything they say is the truth and they can taste lies. They fight for good and always try to take down evil. Zacharel is one of those angels, except a little on the dark side. His boss (the deity) tells him he doesn’t care about human lives because he kills them when they’re in the way of demons. As punishment he has to lead an army full of fallen misfits, and if they fail to help humans and fight demons they wont have another chance in redemption.

Annabelle fought a demon that killed her parents and was put in the insane asylum for trying to defend herself. Four years after the attack and many medications later, Zacharel finds her in one of his demon raids. He takes her under his wing (literally) and they try to find what demon killed her parents. You’ll also get to see some of the Lords of the Underworld characters.

This romance novel is definitely a good start to her new series. It’s has more of a sweet romance than hot like the Lords. Zacharel doesn’t understand human emotion, what to do with one, how to react to certain outbursts. He’s timid and strong at the same time. This makes Annabelle trusting of him, and they end up making a great team and couple. The only criticism I had was the plot. It’s great, as I said… it’s just a little weak in some parts. There isn’t much going on in a few chapters that made me want to skip it. Not because it was bad writing and didn’t relate to the story; it’s just how much emotion was put into the characters. In one moment Zacharel gets a little carried away with her, and she runs. The next scene she says (in a nutshell) “Nah man. I trust you again”. It’s like, why have that in the book if it doesn’t help the plot move forward? Otherwise this book is excellent and wonderful to read. I recommend it to all Gena fans, and people who love her series.
